Smithsonian magazine published an interview with Matt Groening, who revealed that the Springfield in Oregon, in the central United States, is the place where he was based to name the place where his characters live yellow.

As I grew older, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also noticed that Springfield is one of the most common names for a U.S. city, "said Groening publication.
Anticipating the success of the series, the artist seemed a good idea to name it after the place they inhabit Springfield Homer, Bart, Lisa, Maggie and Marge, "and everyone would think it would be his own Springfield."
